Background Checks - Are They Really Necessary?

Background checks are a necessary evil in today’s transient population. Our country seems to be transitioning everyday. It’s to the point where screening employees for all types of jobs has become the norm. You may ask, why screen employees? Because today’s society demands it.

Most companies have been doing employment background checks since the late 1980’s. Many job seekers feel their future employer is being too nosey. But, most screenings are meant to disclose a person’s criminal record while others are more invasive. Since September 11, 2001, background checks have become the standard.

What types of things are revealed in a typical background check? Here are a few of the most popular:

A basic check reveals someone’s criminal record.
To verify someone’s employment history.
Does your education reflect on your resume.
Be careful what you post on your MySpace and/or FaceBook profile.

Some employers allow you to purchase your own background check to reduce the steps in the employment process, which can be a good thing. But, if an employer wants to know even more, they can obtain detailed information about you.

Besides employers, many other people who are responsible for property or the safety of others most likely will have their background checked. Think about the following:

Landlords need to know who will be living on their property. Are they financial sound and do they have a good track record? Chances are you won’t be able to rent an apartment if any black marks appear on your background check.

The sick and elderly should not hire home care without first conducting a background check. The people they’re taking care of are usually frail and can’t fend for themselves.

Babysitters or nannys should be screened. Once again, they care for powerless children.

Background checks have become popular for people who are dating. Men and women alike want to know who you are and what’s in your past.

Since the country is in such a financial crisis, employers feel it’s more necessary than ever to perform a background check. The word “trust” does not have the meaning it did just a few decades ago.

News reports have recently said the government is proposing that airlines start collecting birth dates and genders of passengers beginning in 2009 to be able to perform thorough background checks. Some background checks are understandable but at what point is it an invasion of privacy?
