Health Concerns For Young Mothers

Pregnancy is one of the most beautiful and cherished experiences in life. However, it can also be one of the most challenging events as it comes with numerous responsibilities and choices. The success of a pregnancy depends to a large extent on the health-status and age of the mother. A certain level of physical and mental maturity is essential in order to be able to bear the strain of a pregnancy.

The term ‘young mother’ usually refers to a girl who gets pregnant as a teenager and for a healthy pregnancy, the mother to-be should be at least 18 years old. It is essential to bear in mind that an immature and weak body is less likely to carry to term a healthy baby. In addition, a young mother is more prone to a number of health problems. Low immunity is the major cause for infections in early mothers. Excessive weakness, anemia, gestational diabetes and high blood pressure are conditions that may develop as a result of a pregnancy.

A young mother is more likely to suffer an excessive loss of blood during delivery as well. The stress that accompanies having a baby at a young age could also result in increased anxiety levels and depression. Young mothers are more likely to deliver underweight babies and in most cases, do not manage to carry the baby to full term resulting in premature births or miscarriages. A baby born prematurely may suffer from health problems throughout life as a result of a weak immune system and underdeveloped organs.

Immaturity, unhealthy eating habits, nutritional deficiencies and detrimental lifestyle have the capacity to adversely affect the health of the mother and unborn baby alike. Hence, a planned pregnancy is always recommended as it prepares both the parents, mentally as well as physically, to be able to face this life-altering adventure. A diet with a good balance of various nutrients essential for a healthy body is recommended.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are especially recommended as they are high in nutritional content but low in fats. Foods rich in vitamin C help in strengthening the immune system thus decreasing the risks of numerous infections and health disorders. Folic acid is an essential nutrient that reduces the risk of birth defects related to the heart, brain and nervous system. Regular light exercises and sufficient rest are also recommended for a normal pregnancy. Visiting a gynecologist before trying to conceive will also help in ruling out complications and concerns pertaining to the pregnancy.
