Planning For Your First Pregnancy
The road towards becoming a parent for the first time is one of the best experiences of life. Parenthood comes with a whole lot of responsibilities and numerous challenges and choices. When a pregnancy is planned, parents decide on making the right choices for their baby. A planned pregnancy will further ensure that you are mentally and physically prepared for this life-changing adventure.
Being healthy is a priority for any mother to-be as this is the basis to ensure a wonderful 40 week journey to holding your full term, healthy baby, in your arms. Well balanced meals, rich in numerous nutrients especially folic acid, iron and calcium are essential for a healthy pregnancy. Folic acid reduces the risk of fetal neurological disorders, congenital heart problems and other birth defects and is usually recommended even prior to actually conceiving. Vitamin C helps in strengthening the immune system thus reducing the risks of contracting various infections during pregnancy.
Fresh fruits, salads and juices are a healthy dietary option. Irregular eating habits, junk food and skipping meals should be avoided completely. For a healthy body, a sufficient amount of exercise as well as rest is also essential. Being overweight or underweight may prove disadvantageous during pregnancy. Brisk walks, swimming and aerobics are beneficial in toning the body without being too strenuous. Sufficient rest is needed to help the body rejuvenate and prepare itself for the pregnancy. A lifestyle free of alcohol, tobacco and other recreational drugs also plays an important role in ensuring the health of an unborn child. An exposure to these harmful substances can affect ones ability to conceive or may have adverse effects on the developing fetus.
When trying to conceive, it is essential to keep track of your menstrual cycle. The period exactly halfway between the first day of two consecutive periods is the most fertile phase where the chances to conceive are maximum. Being stress free and relaxed also goes a long way in ensuring a safe pregnancy. Being overanxious and over-expectant can hamper ones chances of getting pregnant and carrying the baby to full term.
Visiting a gynecologist for a pre-pregnancy check up is recommended so as to rule out any complications as well as to clear your doubts about certain aspects of pregnancy. The doctor may prepare a routine background chart with your family background, health concerns, etc. and may recommend certain medical tests, vaccinations or a change in diet and lifestyle based on it. He or she may also recommend exercises to strengthen the uterus and nutritional supplements to fortify the pregnancy. The comfort level that you share with your doctor also plays an important role in the pregnancy.
