Dealing With Smoke Damage
If you live in an apartment building that has ever had a fire in it, but not in your apartment, you will know what this article will be about. I’m talking about smoke fire. This smoke can do as much damage as the actual fire. It can ruin your things just as easy. The smoke will get into all of your stuff and over time, if it’s not removed, it can cause all sorts of things that are harmful to your environment and your health.
Smoke fire can turn your curtains black, if this happens you will have to go buy new ones. You won’t be able to just wash them and hope to get your same colors back. Your walls will have to be washed down with a good cleaner and if this doesn’t work, you will have to paint those walls. Your pictures will have to be taken out of their frames and aired out. This might help, but in some cases it won’t, and you will have to throw them away. If the picture frame glass is still okay you might be able to leave it alone.
Wash all of your bedding to make sure that you get all smell of the smoke out of them. This also goes for all of your clothes. If you have a lot of clothes and you realize that you no longer wear a lot of them, you might just want to get rid of them. Throw them away since they are just going to cost you in the long run.
Your appliances, floors, and carpets are all going to need to be cleaned very well. These items need to be inspected very well. If you smell smoke inside your appliances, you will need to clean them out very well. Your floors will need a good cleaning, too, as this smoke can leave a thin layer of black soot that can’t be seen but can be smelled. The same applies for your carpets. If your carpets are old, it would probably be better to have them replaced. If they are still in good shape you will be further ahead to hire someone to come in and clean them for you.
In a lot of these kinds of cases the landlords are responsible for these apartments, but they don’t have to cover the costs of you having to go to a motel until your apartment is livable again. They also aren’t responsible for your own belongings. It would be a good idea to have some kind of renters insurance.
