The Writing Desk As Office Furniture

The writing desk is an excellent piece of modern office furniture that has evolved radically and drastically over the last several decades. While this type of desk was initially seen as a sign of sophistication, or even aristocracy, older writing desks were often roll top models that included a hutch which could be folded out to extend the area that could be used for hand written letters.

Modern versions tend to be more simple and practical, built for easy use of modern technology like computers. The radical change in design happens not only to accommodate modern technology, but also because the old designs just don’t work well for computer use.

There are still many different models of desks that still follow the roll top or writing hutch design, but these are seen more as pretty but antiquated models. They’re made for decoration and not for modern office use since the change in technology has meant that functional desks need to be able to support laptop and desk top computers easily - including all the cords that are necessary. The older writing hutches and roll top desks look beautiful, but they simply don’t function well in today’s modern office.

As technology has changed, the way individuals write has changed, as well. This is the biggest reason why modern writing desks look so different from the old fashioned designs. Because of this, many contemporary writing desks are fairly interchangeable with computer desks. In fact, often times the same design could be referred to as either or. This is also the reason why many of the new desks tend to be simpler and more standard in design.

So what type of writing desk is better? That depends on the person’s individual needs. If this piece of furniture is only for writing letters or paying bills, or adding additional ambiance, then an antique or old fashioned writing desk should be more than enough.

If your office, or home office, is going to have a computer, then often times a design that is more basic and less fancy is best. This is because it is a practical design that allows for modern computer cables and printer cables, where roll top designs simply aren’t made for that. While the ambiance of an old school writing desk is fantastic, the design does lose points on modern practicality.

Whichever style fits an individual’s needs, the writing desk is a great piece of office furniture that will likely always remain popular for its style as well as its functionality.
