In the beginning of a relationship you often look at the things that make a person different from you as the most appealing things about them. When a person and a relationship is new you are often a lot more forgiving than you would be otherwise of things that will eventually grate on your nerves over time. The newness of the relationship is what keeps you from noticing the things that bother you, until you are invested. Then, when you have been together for some time these opposites or differences will start to bother you more and more.
Will the attraction over power the differences? In some cases it will if the opposites are not anything fundamental. For instance, there are some people who can get past some differences in music tastes, looks, social scene, and more but it’s when things get a little bit more opposite or important that it can be a problem. For instance, will the attraction be enough to get you past being different religions? How about being different political parties? Being a vegan and not? Being an introvert and an extrovert? These are some fundamental differences that can be hard to move past once that initial attraction wears off.
If you have found that you are attracted to someone who is opposite of you on many important issues you should sit down and talk together about these differences and how you will handle them. You should be honest about the way that you feel and what you are willing to do to make things work even though there are some fundamental differences.
When you have this talk you need to be prepared for your honey to tell you that they are not prepared to meet in the middle, deal with criticism, or live with someone that is as different as you both are. This is why it is important to look past the initial appeal and really look at the depth of the opposites that exist between the two of you and have both of you consider if these are differences that you will be able to look past or work through. If not, it’s better to cut your losses now and move on.
