Statistics show that more than half of married people will have an affair at some point during their marriage. This doesn’t make it acceptable to have an affair, it just means that it happens even to the best of us. When you have had an affair the best thing you can do is to end it and start over. Ending an affair can be difficult, but it is necessary if you want to save your marriage.
How do you end an affair? It can be difficult to end an affair if you have emotional feelings toward the person that you have been cheating with. It can also be difficult if you are not really ready to commit to your marriage. You need to get to the point where you are ready to be done with the lies and the cheating and really get serious about your marriage.
When you are ready to end your affair and recommit to your marriage you need to come straight out and tell the person that you have been cheating with that it is over. Let them know that you have enjoyed your time with them, but you cannot continue to lead a life full of lies. Tell them that you want to make a clean break and that you wish them the best. You need to be prepared for them feeling angry or hurt and lashing out. They make it hard to make that clean break and they may even threaten to tell your spouse everything.
To really start over and make the affair a thing of the past you need to be honest with your spouse. The worst thing you can do is allow for your spouse to be told about the affair. Instead of waiting for the person that you have been cheating with to tell your spouse about the affair, you need to tell them. This can be difficult because you don’t want to hurt your spouse, but to really start over you need to be completely honest.
When you have told your spouse and told the person that you have been cheating with that it is over, you need to make sure that you stay true to this. Do not fall into the trap of meeting for coffee or meeting to get closure. Just leave the person that you cheated with alone and focus on your relationship. Even if things in the relationship get tough, you need to stay focused on it and leave the past in the past, otherwise you may be too tempted to fall into familiar routines.
Ending an affair takes work and once you do it, you need to be sure that you do not simply find someone else to cheat with. You need to make a clean break and really change your ways. Focus on the health of your marriage and keep your focus there so that you will be sure to stay the course.
