A Beginners Guide To Patch Panels

Whatever your reason, you have come to the realisation that you will indeed need to figure out what a patch panel is and why they are affecting your life. These have been in use for many years, since the dawn of the black and white movies and images of telephone communication operators who patch you through to the person you are trying to call. These are quite simply connectors that play a vital part in our IT world and are also known as a jackfield or patch bay.

These are called patch panels because back during the 1930s and 1940s, telephone operators would use these patch people through; hence they have continued to be called a patch panel. However patching people through is not a practise used in our modern world today. So what exactly is a patch panel? These are panels which are commonly rack mounted and houses cable connections. The front side of a panel will hold shorter cables, whilst the back will hold longer and weightier cables. These can look like rather large switchboards that connect incoming and outgoing lines for communication between computers and other electronic systems.

What are patch panels used for? These allow circuits to be plugged in manually and allow for a more flexible way of routing the restoration of different circuit types. This kind of technology was originally used for connecting telephone calls, which today no longer requires manual input and plugging. These days the panels are used for data transferring, telephone transfers and audio or video application.

There are a number of places where these are used regularly. These areas can be in broadcasting studios, recording studios, telephone exchanges, video and audio facilities department, technical control departments, computer networking facilities and communication networks. Many will have seen that these are incorporated in local area networks whereby the connect computers to one another and connect them to the internet.

Patch panels have their place in communications whereby they can connect and reconnect hardware, therefore they play a vital part in important data transference. These also make for a cheaper alternative to switching equipment, which very often to not transmit the signals and data without coming across problems or losing data. The patch bay never loses data information when making transferences, these very often have redundant power supplies which prevent any loss from happening.

Furthermore the jackfield are available wirelessly, where a switch is flicked rather than plugging in wires for a cross connection to take place. These also have a protector which is a back-up plan for instances of power failure. Using these can help with fast data transference and faster communication connectivity.
